“Gamelan instruments and ensembles are increasingly being used in novel ways, both in Indonesia and internationally. But are there limits to invention due to mystical beliefs and respect for time-honoured modes of practice? What societal resistances are there to radical re-interpretations? Are tradition and innovation opposites or necessary complements? What guidelines, if any, should artists adhere to in the renovation of tradition? This panel, moderated by Professor Sumarsam, Winslow-Kaplan Professor of Music at Wesleyan University and author of Javanese Gamelan and the West, will pose these questions to four of the foremost composers for gamelan working today.”
